AV (audio visual) senders are made up of two or more units - a wireless transmitter that connects to your primary display device (via a composite or HDMI cable, depending on the unit) and one or more wireless receivers that connect to your secondary display devices (also via a composite or HDMI cable). AV senders give you the flexibility of sharing content to whatever device you want to enjoy watching it on - whether that be in the rumpus, kitchen, bedroom or backyard.

This refers to the maximum distance the signal will travel from the AV transmitter to the receiver. Often this is referred to as "line-of-sight" - meaning if there are obstructions between the transmitter and receiver that impede the signal, then this distance will reduce. Of course walls, furniture, and other physical objects can impact on range, so ultimately your own setup will determine precise available range.

Analogue transmission is commonplace, however more recent digital technology is now available in some units. Just like analogue to digital TV reception provides clearer & higher quality transmission, the same applies to an AV sender. Digital is less prone to interference and signal impairment. However, just as digital is something of an "all or nothing" proposition, if you're pushing the limits of range, a medium-quality analogue signal may be better than spotty digital reception. But if you're working within the suitable range of the units, digital will produce superior quality every time.

Once you've connected the transmitter and receivers you should be good to go! It's worth pointing out that the signals on all the display devices will be the same, regardless of which devices are turned on or off. So if you're watching back-to-back episodes of M*A*S*H in your study, anyone who turns on the TV in the lounge room will have to watch it as well, unless you have another AV source they can use. If you're watching cable TV, they should be able to watch the Blu-Ray with no issue. With IR extension, the person with the remote control has the power! AV senders really come into their own when you want your audio visual content to move around the house or office with you.

This functionality actually sends signals in the reverse direction. Receiving infrared from your remote control, it sends those signals back to the transmitter, and re-emits the infrared signals for your devices. In plain English, that means you can take your remote controls with you, and maintain full control of your devices! While the thought of bonus cardio to and from the transmitter any time you want to change channels or control playback might be a nice idea, having full control at your fingertips is a better one. They're universal so should work with virtually any standard infrared remote you have.

If you would like to enable just one secondary device at a time, then a kit with a single AV receiver will be ample. You can move it around between devices but it will only work with the device it's plugged into. If you want more flexibility, make sure you pick a kit which offers spare receivers as an add-on. Using multiple spare receivers is a great way to broadcast content to multiple (virtually unlimited displays) in a commercial environment too!
